Situated in
the very heart of sunny Provence the central Var region is
one of the most beautiful and unspoilt in all of France. ‘Les
Olives’ is situated 1km from Salernes, which is a very
typical French village with a twice-weekly morning market
and several good traditional restaurants, boulangerie, patisserie,
poisonnerie, bank, and shopping. Nearby Draguignan (20 mins
by car), one of the larger Provencal towns, has all the amenities
one could hope for including good medical and dental facilities.
There are numerous neighboring villages to explore, each with
it’s own unique charm. See Guide to the Var page for
more information.
The nearest Mediterranean beaches are St.
Tropez or Frejus, both approximately 25 miles. A few kilometers
lower down on the coast, you can visit Port Grimaud, a seaside
vacation spot imagined by the architect François Spoerry.
Thousands of visitors come to see this internationally renowned
resort each year. Not to be missed is the spectacular Lac
de Sainte Croix, a popular spot for boating and watersports
with sandy beaches and pedaloes for hire. Flanking the Lac
is a truly undiscovered gem, the Gorge du Verdon, the largest,
deepest and most dramatic in Europe - France’s answer
to the Grand Canyon. Electric boats can be hired for self-guided
water tours of the canyon. Both the Lac and the gorge are
approximately 20-30 minutes drive - many of our guests pack
picnics and sunblock and set off for the day!
For those with a taste for adventure, there
is windsurfing at Ste Maxime, vertiginous rock climbing, fishing
and kayaking at Lac de Carces, a 20 minutes drive.
There is an excellent golf course at St.
Enderol approximately 25 minutes drive near Le Muy. Another
good one is Barbaroux near Brignoles, approximately 40 minutes
drive, and several more around Cannes and Mougins. All have
reasonable green fees, no membership necessary. Phone numbers
available for booking tee times, by request.
There is good skiing approximately 2-3 hours
drive. Please enquire.
